Bank credit increases

MUMBAI, April 19

BANK credit has increased by Rs 24,510 crore to touch Rs 7,49,878 crore for the fortnight ended April 4, 2003. This is inclusive of food credit, which decreased by Rs 4,888 crore and non-food credit, which increased by Rs 16,219 crore.

Loans and advances provided to the Central and State governments in the form of ways and means went up by Rs 6,728 crore and Rs 1,154 crore, respectively to touch Rs 11,642 crore and Rs 3,682 crore, respectively.

Total accommodation provided by scheduled commercial banks to the commercial sector in the form of bank credit and investments in shares, debentures, bonds and commercial paper etc., remained at Rs 7,69,219 crore as on March 21, 2003.

Year-on-year money supply was at 15.3 per cent.
