Maruti's 4 millionth (4,000,000) car, a Riviera red, rolling out of the company's plant in Gurgaon in Haryana on Saturday.

NEW DELHI, April 19

THE country's largest carmaker, Maruti Udyog Ltd, today rolled out its four millionth vehicle from its manufacturing plant at Gurgaon near here, nearly 20 years after the company launched its first model.

The historic vehicle was a Riviera red, the special edition version of Alto Lx. The first model was a Maruti 800.

"The landmark of four million vehicles is another opportunity to reiterate our commitment to the Indian customer. We must resolve to achieve the highest standards of quality, productivity and service to satisfy our customers who have brought us this far", said Mr Jagdish Khattar, Managing Director of Maruti Udyog.

Maruti is achieving the four million-vehicle-mark at a time when the company is implementing a three-year plan to reach global benchmarks in quality, productivity and customer satisfaction.

The plan, christened Challenge 50, has a target to improve productivity by 50 per cent and reduce cost per vehicle by 30 per cent by 2004-05.

Maruti achieved its first million unit sales in March 1994, while the second million came about in October 1997.

The third millionth vehicle was rolled out in June 2000.
