Bank credit dips Rs 10,342 crore

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, May 10

TOTAL outstanding bank credit fell for a second successive week by Rs 10,342 crore to touch Rs 7,31,429 crore for the week ended April 25.

For the fortnight ended April 18, bank credit fell by Rs 17,006 crore to touch Rs 7,32,872 crore.

According to the RBI's weekly statistical report, the fall of Rs 10,342 crore was due to a fall of Rs 8,211 crore in non-food credit and Rs 2,130 crore in food credit.

While some bankers attribute the drop in credit to seasonal shifts in credit demand others do admit to undoing of window dressing hurriedly executed by banks towards the end of each financial year.
