Accountancy Logistics - Airlines Air India to drop fares on domestic routes Tunia Cherian George
MUMBAI, May 26 AIR India is set to join the `fare wars' raging in the Indian skies. It has decided to reduce the domestic fares on the 14 sectors it flies within the country. Details of the revised fares would be announced on Tuesday, an airline official told Business Line on Monday. The domestic legs of A-I's international flights cover 11 cities, namely, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram. According to the airline's spokesperson, the new fares will be five per cent lower than the comparable Apex fares offered by Indian Airlines, on day flights. For night flights, the fares will be 15 per cent lower. Another advantage of the scheme was that the passenger could book the ticket just one day in advance as against 15 days' in advance in the case of Apex scheme of Indian Airlines, the spokesperson said. He said the decision to reduce the fares followed the similar schemes announced by domestic airlines recently. A-I's domestic fares have always been lower compared to other airlines. "We want to remain competitive in this sector as well." The airline last week extended its services with the introduction of a Lucknow-Jeddah flight, which is expected to enable passengers from Uttar Pradesh and the adjoining areas of Bihar to fly with greater comfort. According to it, of the 14 lakh people of Indian origin residing in Saudi Arabia, almost four lakh belong to UP, Bihar and North-East Madhya Pradesh, for whom Lucknow could serve as a convenient take-off point.
