Letters Visa violations
Software developers and programmers may be a privileged lot in India but not when they cross the country's borders. There is a clamour for government intervention when visa-violators are apprehended in countries such as Malaysia and the Netherlands, for instance. Every country is now taking extra precautions about foreign visitors on their soil, especially because of the threat of terrorists and sympathisers on the prowl. It may be recalled that the Home Minister, Mr L. K. Advani, gave a call some time ago to law enforcement agencies to apprehend all foreigners overstaying in India and "throw them out". It is but natural that other countries do the same. Under such circumstances, the Indian government can only issue proper `advisories' to its nationals not to overstay their visas in foreign countries. Government intervention is called for only in cases of miscarriage of justice. It is seen from the instances so far reported that software personnel are capable of seeking proper legal recourse on their own whenever they are in trouble, regardless of government intervention.
