IT Training IIITM-K to branch out to embedded systems Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, May 27 AFTER having established itself as a leader in the area of information systems, e-learning systems and knowledge management areas, the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K) is now seeking to move into embedded systems and microelectronics. As the first step in this direction, the institute is setting up an embedded systems laboratory and would soon start a course in the subject for its students, according to Prof K.R. Srivathsan, Director. The lab was formally launched at Technopark here today. The launch is being executed in close partnership with Tata Elxi and Ushus Tech, both Technopark- based companies here. Once the laboratory is fully established, IIITM-K will also be conducting courses for the industry and engineering college teachers in the subject. Embedded software development is increasingly becoming an attractive business, according to Prof Srivathsan. This has led to great demand for embedded system developers. Unfortunately, there are very few institutions providing quality education and training on core technologies such as embedded systems and VLSI. IIITM-K will soon be launching a full credit course on embedded systems and advanced networking for the final term for its current batch of the Post-Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGDIT) students. An advanced version of the same course is being planned for the working professionals in the industry, R&D and academic institutions as a continuing education programme. The programmes have the twin objectives of providing the participants a strong foundation of embedded technologies, systems and applications and industry oriented hands-on pra- ctical training. To achieve these objectives, the institute has set up a "scalable facility" for educational and industrial training and development in the area at the embedded systems lab.
