NTC workers stage `stay-in' agitation

Our Bureau

COIMBATORE, May 27

OVER 200 textile workers belonging to the NTC run textile mills in the city on Tuesday went on a stay-in agitation at the NTC's headquarters premises at Kattoor area of the city.

The 48-hour `stay-in' strike billed as `veedu thirumbaa porattam' (`Not to return home') has been called to protest the recovery of cash advances extended to the NTC workers who were not eligible for the payment of annual bonus.

The NTC workers have been demanding that the cash advances given to the workers in the earlier period should not be recovered and be treated as `special allowance' in lieu of bonus. The recovery of the cash advance became a contentious issue among the NTC workers ever since the NTC management chose to treat it as the dues to be recovered at the time of settlement of terminal benefits from the workers attaining superannuation or opting the voluntary retirement.
