Industry Associations Marketing - Retailing States - Tamil Nadu Chamber for ban on corporates in retail trade
Our Correspondent Madurai, Aug. 24 The Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in a plea to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, has demanded for a ban of large corporate houses from entering into retail trade in the State, as done in Utter Pradesh. In a statement here, the Chamber President, Mr Rethinavelu, drawing attention to the ban on entry and even closure of all such retail stores in Uttar Pradesh, pleaded for a similar embargo in the State. He said the conglomerates should concentrate only in running technology-oriented large industrial units with heavy investment. Allowing them in retail trade would severely impact and jeopardise the livelihood of 4 crore small and medium retailers and 20 crore people dependent on it. The Governments, both at the Centre and in the State should provide all required assistance for the retail traders to transform themselves as modern and well organised retail units. He further said that large Indian conglomerates should not be permitted in retail trade, specifically in grocery, fruits and vegetables in the State.
