Aquaculture States - Tamil Nadu Rs 3.2 cr grant to train inland fish farmers Our Correspondent Madurai, Oct. 16 The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has sanctioned a grant of Rs 3.20 crore to the Centre for Aquaculture Research and Extension (CARE), St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli, to train inland farmers on murrel fish culture techniques. Granted under ICAR’s National Agricultural Innovation Project’s Production to Consumption Scheme, 100 inland fish farmers will be trained every year on the culture of murrel, a freshwater fish variety with medicinal properties and in marketing the harvested murrel. The programme will be implemented in association with the Central Institute for Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar, Orissa and Live Fee Research Centre, New College, Chennai. According to sources, the district has 2,250 ponds small irrigation tank having an extent of 9,600 acres. Of this, only 750 ponds and some wells are used for fish culture. The programme is aimed at using underutilised water bodies for fish culture. A farmer with 15 cents can successfully convert the land into a pond to culture murrel and earn an annual income ranging between Rs 60,000 and Rs 1 lakh, according to Rev. Fr.
