Members of AIBOC (All India Bank Officers Confederation) met here on Wednesday evening to condemn the attack of an officer of Canara Bank's Somandurai Branch near Pollachi last week.
AIBOC General Secretary GV Manimaran, while expressing concern about the incident appealed for protection of public assets.
"As an institution, banks deal with public assets, money. There is therefore a need to protect such institutions as also the people who serve there from being beaten up. Such incidents tend to put off youngsters from joining banking services," he said, adding that "the Somandurai branch attack by two unidentfied assailants, who have since been nabbed, is a one-off incident. But the gory attack has sent shock waves across the industry."
Asserting that he is not for politicising the issue, Manimaran said AIBOC would appeal to the management of banks to deploy adequate staff at branches, particularly the rural ones.
He clarified that the AIBOC meeting was only to sensitise the members and create awareness amongst the public to take up their grievances with the officials concerned rather than resort to beating up of staff.
