Marketing Research Hyundai, Toyota models seduce new buyers Our Bureau
MUMBAI, Dec. 23 HYUNDAI and Toyota models continue to have a strong appeal among new vehicle buyers in India, according to the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2002 India Automotive Performance Execution and Layout (APEAL) study released on Monday. The Hyundai Santro ranks highest in the premium compact segment and the Hyundai Accent tops the entry mid-size segment while the Toyota Qualis ranks highest in the MUV segment. The industry as a whole has been more successful at delighting new vehicle buyers in 2002, achieving an overall APEAL score of 762 out of a possible 1,000, higher by 12 points compared to 2001, according to the study, which also found that vehicle styling and technology are becoming increasingly important drivers of vehicle choice. Meanwhile, the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2002 India Initial Quality Study (IQS), which was also released on Monday, said initial vehicle quality has improved in India for the fifth consecutive year. The industry wide average of 151 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) in 2002 is 23 per cent lower than it was in 2001, and is one-third (36 per cent) of that seen just four years ago, according to the study. The Hyundai Santro, with 106 PP100, ranks highest in the premium compact segment, improving 24 per cent over 2001. The Maruti Alto (114 PP100) and Maruti Wagon R (123 PP100), respectively follow in the rankings, both achieving PP100 scores better than segment average of 147. The Ford Ikon ranks highest in the entry mid-sized segment, as it did in 2001, achieving 126 PP100 in 2002. The Hyundai Accent (130 PP100) and the Maruti Esteem (164 PP100), respectively follow in the segment rankings. The Toyota Qualis once again ranks highest in the MUV segment, improving seven points over 2001 to 185 PP100 in 2002. The Mahindra Bolero follows the Qualis in the rankings at 221 PP100, improving significantly by 71 points as the Tata Safari rounds out the segment's top three models, recording 297 PP100.
