Telecommunications Cellular base doubles Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, April 14 THE cellular subscriber base has increased by over 97 per cent in fiscal 2002-03, with as many as 6.2 million new users joining the bandwagon. As per the latest estimates provided by the Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI), the total subscriber base at end-March 2003 reads 12.68 million as against 6.43 million in the corresponding month in the previous year. Among the operators, Bharti continues to be the single largest mobile operator accounting for 30.71 lakh subscribers. It is also the single largest operator in any one single circle, having bagged over 9.02 lakh customers in Delhi. Meanwhile, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) which launched its operations only in end-October 2002, has already become the second largest operator with a base of 22.56 lakh. Hutchison has slipped to the third position with 21.64 lakh. The COAI statistics note that the four metros continue to be the highest at 44.39 lakh subscribers followed closely by Circle A at 43.65 lakh subscribers and Circle B at 33.74 lakh subscribers. Circle C continues to be far behind at only 5.08 lakh subscribers. However, higher growth was recorded in the A, B and C circles, with the metros recording a lower growth in addition. It appears as though people in the metros are waiting for the limited mobility operations being offered by Reliance and Tata TeleServices, more than in the other circles. While the monthly growth in subscribers was 3.38 per cent in the metros, it was 10.18 per cent in Circle A, 10.69 percent in Circle B and 12.74 per cent in Circle C. The all-India additions in March were 7.7 per cent higher than in the previous month, with as many as 9.31 lakh new subscribers signing up.
