Railways to deploy GPS safety tool

HYDERABAD, April 15

IN an ambitious Rs 1,600-crore satellite-based technology project, the Indian Railways plans to use the GPS (Global Positioning System) and install a countrywide network of anti-collision device (ACD) systems that provides advanced information and thereby helps in prevention of rail accidents.

Developed indigenously, this anti-collision device network is to be installed in a phased manner across the country and feasibility studies have been initiated across zones. According to senior officials of the Railways, each and every locomotive will be provided with this anti-collision device at the brake van, all stations and covers both unmanned and manned level crossings.

This ACD grid uses a combination of satellite beams and sends and receives signals. These signals are used in combination with the GPS network and help the Railways in extending safety measures with a link up to early warning systems. They alert the locomotive head as also the station as the case may be by providing advanced signals and thereby prevent collision, the officials said at a press conference today.

This ambitious project is planned to cover whole of the Indian Railways infrastructure in a phased manner. To start with, the ACD has been deployed on a stretch of about 1,800 kms of broad gauge section of the North Eastern Railway with an investment of Rs 50 crore. This is gradually programmed to be replicated across various networks, they said.

The survey to extend this safety facility has been handed over to the Konkan Railway by the South Central Railway. The survey mandate covers a stretch of about 1,641 kms of non-electrified route on Vasco-da-Gama-Madgaon-Londa-Hubli-Guntakal-Renigunta sections and the electrified route on Ernakulam-Shoranur-Palghat-Erode, Chennai and Bangalore, Jolarpettai-Chennai sections of the Southern Railways.
