Cement despatches down due to truckers' strike

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, May 3

THREE cement majors - ACC Ltd, Larsen & Toubro and Grasim Industries - have reported decline in despatches, year on year, for the month of April 2003. All three attributed the decline to the nation-wide truckers' strike that affected goods movement across the country during the month.

One exception among the cement majors was Gujarat Ambuja Ltd, which reported a 34 per cent increase in despatches, at 8.42 lakh tonnes for the month (6.26 lakh tonnes in April 2002) and a 35 per cent increase in production, at 8.42 lakh tonnes (6.22 lakh tonnes).

ACC reported a 2.6 per cent decline in despatches, at 12.13 lakh tonnes (down from 12.46 lakh tonnes) while production showed an increase of 2.4 per cent increase, at 12.37 lakh tonnes (12.07 lakh tonnes).

Larsen & Toubro reported a 13.8 per cent slump in despatches, at 8.7 lakh tonnes, as compared to the despatches of 10.1 lakh tonnes reported in April 2002. Production too dipped 17.4 per cent to 9 lakh tonnes, as against the production of 10.9 lakh tonnes reported for April 2002.

At Grasim Industries, despatches declined 10.8 per cent, to 9.22 lakh tonnes from 10.34 lakh tonnes; while production showed an 11 per cent decline, at 9.27 lakh tonnes (10.42 lakh tonnes).
