People Money & Banking - People Jt. Secy appointments to Finance Ministry cleared GC Chaturvedi to take over from Ajit Sharan Sarbajeet K. Sen
NEW DELHI, May 20 WHILE the real big-time changes in the Finance Ministry are waiting to happen, the Appointment Committee of Cabinet has cleared a few joint secretary-level appointments for manning some of the key posts in the Ministry. These include Mr G.C. Chaturvedi, an IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre to take over as Joint Secretary, Banking and Insurance Division, from Mr Ajit M. Sharan. Mr Sharan, who during his three-year tenure as Joint Secretary (JS), Insurance, had steered some crucial Government moves leading to the opening up of the insurance sector and the legislative requirement in the immediate aftermath, would be going back to his parent Haryana cadre. The Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) would have a new face in Mr Vivek Mehrotra, also of the Haryana cadre, who would take over as Joint Secretary, in place of Mr Navin Kumar. Mr Kumar, of the Bihar cadre IAS, who was Joint Secretary, East European Countries (EEC), has been put on compulsory wait in the DEA till a suitable post is found for him. Ms Sushama Nath, of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, would replace Ms Usha Mathur in the Department of Expenditure. Ms Mathur, who was JS (Personnel), DEA has been repatriated to her parent cadre in the Indian Railway Account Service (IRAS). The Department of Revenue would also have a new face in Mr Rakesh Singh, an IAS from the Punjab cadre, who would replace Mr Prashant Mehta. Mr Mehta would be shifting as Joint Secretary, Ministry of mines and would hold the post till September, 27, 2005. He would be replacing Mr S.P. Gupta, currently Joint Secretary, Ministry of Mines. Mr Chaturvedi, Mr Mehrotra, Ms Nath and Mr Singh would all have a normal tenure of five years that for which a joint secretary in normally appointed in a ministry.
