The bank intends to take post-graduates in business administration, with specialisation in marketing

CHENNAI, May 22

ANDHRA Bank has kicked off its campus recruitment programme — it intends to start with Chennai, the bank's Chairman and Managing Director, Mr B. Vasanthan, told Business Line.

"A three member team is here to recruit 75 people from campuses," he said, adding that Andhra Bank was the first public sector bank to recruit directly from campus. The bank intends to take post-graduates in business administration, with specialisation in marketing.

The selected candidates would be fitted in Scale-I and II positions, Mr Vasanthan said.

Alongside, respondents to an advertisement for recruiting 150 probationary officers will take a written test shortly.

The Institute for Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), Mumbai, would conduct the test.

Last year, Andhra Bank took in 130 `specialists'— people with specialisation in economics, agriculture, computer applications and foreign exchange.

The intake of "fresh blood" was an exercise that had been running parallel with a slew of promotions in the bank, he said. Of the 12,000-odd employees of the bank, 7,780 are officers (including 600 who got their promotion letters only last week).

The large-scale promotions (which incidentally eroded the unions' strength) had helped in making a "psychological contract" with the employees, resulting in higher level of motivation, Mr Vasanthan said.

Meanwhile, the bank has finalised plans to establish a `HR and Technology Research Centre' at Hyderabad.

The Andhra Pradesh Government has given the bank five acres of land for setting up the institute.

Apart from in-house training to the bank staff, the centre would also conduct `banking research'— introduction of new products, adoption and customisation of products successful elsewhere in the world and marketing.

Also, the bank recently bought 12,000 sq. ft. of office space in the Hi-tech City (Phase-II) in Hyderabad, for establishing a data centre, Mr Vasanthan said.
