Haldia strike strains Paradip

The strike by contractors’ workers at Haldia dock, continuing for more than a week now, has led to diversion of ships, mostly iron ore ships, to Paradip port, causing problems there. As many as 50 ships are waiting for berths at Paradip and nearly half of them are to load iron ore. Paradip Port Trust, therefore, has been forced to take some emergency measures. For example, one additional berth has been allotted exclusively for loading iron ore and the arrangement wil l continue for three months. Also, restriction has been clamped on the unloading of imported cement clinkers. A ship carrying clinkers from China takes a long time to complete unloading, thus occupying the berth for a week or so. The current problem not being the port’s making, the authorities feel helpless. The frustration is all the more because the performance of the port in the first quarter of the fiscal has been impressive, posting more than 25 per cent growth in traffic (including crude) vis-À-vis the same period of last year. The present situation, it is feared, might slow down the tempo.
