Barge owners to set up repair yard at Mumbai port

Varada Bhat

Mumbai, July 13

Bargeowners have offered to set up a ship repair yard at the Mumbai port at the allotted land for repair facilities.

The Indian Barge owners’ Association has sent a proposal to the Mumbai Port Trust in this regard, said an official.

Confirming the development, Mr Sarvesh K. Shahi, President, Indian Barge Owners’ Association and Chairman and Managing Director, SKS Logistics Ltd, said, “In April, the Mumbai Port Trust had sent a circular to several shipping industry bodies regarding the allotment of land for repair services.”

The circular said, “the owners of barges, tugs, etc, would have to make their own arrangement for the infrastructure required for ship repairing.”.

Currently, the Mumbai Port Trust has two repair yards. But one of them will be closed anytime due to the upcoming offshore terminal project, added Mr Shahi.

The consortium led by Gammon India, which began construction of the offshore terminal project in 2008, is hoping to complete the project by 2010. The offshore container terminal would add around 12 million tonnes capacity to the port.

As a result, the port users had demanded the authorities for a place for creating facilities for repairs to barges, tugs and so on.

In April, the Mumbai Port Trust had decided to allot two plots at Powder Works Bunder for the yard. The plot is about 90m x 34 m, which would have a capacity of 4,000-5,000 DWT.

The repair yard could cost around Rs 5 crore depending on the facilities required.
