Our Bureau

CALCUTTA, Feb. 25

THE erection work of two giant shiploaders for the mechanised coal handling facility at the Paradip port was kicked off at the port recently.

The loaders would be commissioned by October, according to Mr. S.K. Mohapatra, Chairman of Paradip Port Trust. The construction of the berth was complete and, once the loaders had been erected, the conveyor belts and other facilities would be installed, he said.

The loaders were being built by Krupp Fordertechnik of Germany while conveyors would be supplied by L&T, he said, adding that every attempt was being made to commission the modern coal handling plant by the end of this year. The plant was being set up wi th the assistance from the Asian Development Bank.

Each shiploader will have the capacity to load 4,400 tonnes of thermal coal per hour. The total cost of the shiploaders is estimated at Rs. 53 crores. This is for the first time such huge loaders are being installed in any Indian port, he said.
