`Gear up to meet $50-b textile exports by 2010'

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Feb. 25

THE country must aim at achieving an export target of at least $50 billions by the end of this decade and look at strategies to enhance its share in the global textile and clothing trade, the Textile Secretary, Mr. Anil Kumar, has said.

``This target can easily be met. The momentum is already there. We have to evolve measures in an integrated manner which would exploit the inherent strengths that the sector enjoys in this country,'' he said in his address at the national seminar on `App arel exports in the new millennium: India's readiness to face WTO challenges.'

On its part, the Government would announce a new textile policy that would take care of the prevailing as well as the emerging scenario in this sector. ``We are working on the new textile policy which will stimulate growth and provide direction in a way which would enable the growth of all sub-sectors of the industry in a harmonious manner. The policy will be announced within a couple of weeks (current session of Parliament),'' he said.
