India seeks US ties in eco-trade

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, March 7

INDIA has sought to explore possibilities of technical and financial cooperation from US in the field of development of eco-villages, eco-tourism and creation of mass awareness about environment-related issues.

According to an official release, this was indicated by the Minister for Environment and Forests, Mr. T.R. Baalu, when an eight-member US delegation led by the Assistant Secretary for State for Oceans, Environmental and Scientific Affairs, Mr. David B. S andalow, met him on Tuesday.

Welcoming the Indo-US initiative for further cooperation in the area of climate change, Mr. Baalu said that the Kyoto mechanism could offer the opportunity to achieve mutually-beneficial partnerships between the industrialised and developing countries.

When the Kyoto Protocol comes into force, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) should serve as an additional source of technologies and resources, the Minister said.
