CALCUTTA, March 7

THE importance of mobile communication and putting in place cyber laws appropriate for India are among the subjects of focussed discussion at a two-day, all-India seminar on `Information technology: Opportunities and challenges in the new millennium' sla ted to begin here on March 10 under the aegis of the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum and the Institution of Engineers (India).

Mr. S. An action plan towards this end would be prepared and presented for the consideration of the Government.

E-commerce and cyber laws, networking and computing, parallel computing, multimedia, ERP and data mining and IT-enabled services are among the subjects that would be discussed at the seminar. The importance of mobile communication could not be missed out , especially during natural calamities, which disrupt communication networks, Mr. Goswamy said.

With information technology estimated to create four billion jobs globally within the next five years, the sector was expected to drive economic growth at a faster-than-hitherto pace. Emerging opportunities in the evolving scenario and the imperatives fo r effective communication and exchange of information between industries, user groups and students would also be discussed at the seminar.

Around 200 delegates from across the country would participate in the seminar. Simultaneously, an exhibition would be held for companies to showcase products developed by them for the IT sector. At the `industry forum,' experts from industries would shar e their experiences with regard to using IT for improving products, efficiency and turnover.
