Economy
Rural economy
According to the National Sample Survey Organisation, the incidence of rural poverty increased to 42.58 per cent in 1998 against 37.37 per cent in 1993-94 (Business Line, June 8). In 1999-2000, it declined to 24 per cent.

States
Debt-ridden Kerala
This refers to` Kerala State drowning in debts' (Business Line, June 14). The need for an objective debate on the working of an elected Government is urgently needed. The Government does not have any mandate to borrow money indiscriminately or spend lavi shly on utopian plans.
