May 3: India, Vietnam and Brazil - the three cashew majors, constituting around 90 per cent of the trade - come together to form an alliance. May 10: National Multi-Commodity Exchange launches new series in soya oil, guar seed and chana desi futures contracts. The southwest monsoon sets in over parts of southeast Bay of Bengal, the Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Sea, at least eight days ahead of schedule. May 14: An emergency meeting called by various trade bodies decides to form an action committee to tackle the issues arising out of the recent Government notification on cancelling the APMC (Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee) market yard status to Bunder area in Old Mangalore. May 23: The Tamil Nadu Government reduces the rate at which value-added tax is levied on processed tea from 4 per cent to 1 per cent May 30: The Centre decides not purchase a single tonne of wheat against the 10 lakh tonnes (lt) import tender floated on its behalf by the State Trading Corporation of India.
