AV Birla group scion Ananya Birla has been roped as a recording artist by Universal Music Group, a move that will see her entrepreneurial corporate persona widening into the entertainment arena.
The 22-year-old daughter of Kumar Mangalam and Neerja Birla will launch her debut international single in November.
Devraj Sanyal, Managing Director and CEO, Universal Music Group, South Asia, said: “From singing, song writing and composing, Ananya displays natural flair. From our end, we will make sure that she’s working with the best talent in the business to produce music that’s in line with today’s global sounds and through the UMG network; we will ensure that her music travels beyond boundaries.”
Ananya Birla said, “My creative energy and inputs have always been respected. This is as much as their baby as it is mine. I can’t wait till the track is out for all of you to hear!” Ananya said she has been exposed to a diverse range of music and has been playing the santoor since the age of 11; additionally, she taught herself to play the guitar.
But it was during her time at university in London that the vibrant music scene and the bustling gig culture inspired her to consider transforming her passion into a career.
Ananya credits this exposure in London for catalysing her musical journey. Coldplay, AR Rahman, Eminem, Ed Sheeran, The Fray are some of her favourite artists.
Last month, Ananya ventured into the luxury e-commerce business with CuroCarte. Her other ventures include Svatantra Microfin Pvt Ltd, a Mumbai-based start-up microfinance institution.
Ananya had launched the venture in 2013 with the aim of empowering women in rural areas of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
