Express distribution and supply chain solutions company Gati Ltd is planning to enter the e-commerce business through a separate entity.
“We have plans to start an e-commerce venture. This, however, is not going to compete with our clients. It would be in the niche area of ethnic products and those with GI (geographical indication). Details are being worked out,” Vikash Khatri, Head (Transformation) of Gati-KWE, said.
The company has revamped its website and launched an app, giving its customers a mobile interface for several services. It lets customers to track the consignments, locate a Gati store and to know price points.
The firm earned Rs 128 crore business from e-commerce players. “We are getting about 20 per cent revenues from e-commerce,” he said here on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference to announce the launch of the app marking the 25th anniversary of the firm, he said business from e-commerce activity was growing at 100 per cent in the past few quarters.
Seeing good traction in business from e-commerce players such as Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal, the express distribution firm is planning to add additional capacities, besides launching its own e-commerce window.
The firm had set up four exclusive warehouses (fulfilment centres) in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi for its e-commerce clients.
The group was also planning to build strengths in cold-storage warehousing and logistics. “We have invested Rs 120 crore on a facility in Delhi and fleet. We are planning to put in Rs 100 crore depending on the demand,” Meera Madhusudan Singh, Chief Brand Custodian of Gati, has said.
