Premium car maker Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) on Tuesday said it will voluntarily replace Takata passenger front airbag inflators of 41,580 vehicles of the previous generation of Jazz, City, Civic and Accord, as part of Honda’s precautionary global recall campaign.
The replacement will be carried out free at HCIL dealerships across India, the company said.
“The replacement of inflators for the affected models would begin immediately and the company will communicate with customers directly,” HCIL said.
Out of the total 41,580 vehicles, number of Jazz includes 7,265 units, Civic 1,200 units and Accord 659 units – all manufactured in 2012. The maximum number of recall is of the company’s best-selling model City, with 32,456 units, manufactured in 2012.
This is the company’s third such recall in the past one year for the same reason — faulty Takata airbags. Millions of cars have been recalled globally over the past two years due to the faulty Takata airbags by not only Honda, but companies such as Ford Motor.
Honda’s recall in the US itself has reached more than 11 million units. The largest recall was done in July last year, when HCIL recalled 1,90,578 units including 1.37 lakh of the City, 22,483 units of Accord, 15,706 units of Jazz and 13,605 units of Civic – all manufactured between 2003 and 2011.
