Shantha Biotechnics, an arm of Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi, has supplied 20 million doses of ShanIPV to the government since December 2015.
The final shipment from Shantha Biotechnics’ manufacturing site in Medchal, Telangana, was sent on Tuesday which completed supply of 20 million doses, according to a release. ShanIPV is the only Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) to be locally manufactured and provided to the government.
Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis (usually of the legs). Among those paralysed, 5-10 per cent die when their chest muscles become immobilised. There is no cure for polio. It can only be prevented by vaccination.
