SRF Ltd, one of the few producers of refrigerants in the country, will now start manufacturing HFO 1234yf gas, a new generation coolant used in automobiles, the company announced on Friday. HFO 1234yf, which is a next generation refrigeration gas, is supposed to have a low global warming potential.
“The breakthrough initiative will make SRF the first technology developer outside the US and Europe for manufacture of HFO 1234yf, which is expected to find increasing use in car air-conditioning systems globally in future,” SRF said in a statement.
India has largely been depending on hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) gas for the cooling gas. These coolants, however, have been criticised as a “super greenhouse gases” because of their high global warming capacity. HFCs are considered to be at least 300 times more warming than CO2.
India and other developing countries have been under significant pressure from developed countries to phase out HFCs and opt for greener alternatives.
The company said it has developed the technology for producing the new gas in-house and it will also allow the company to manufacture, brand and sell HFO 1234yf in the global markets and also help it develop other HFO refrigerants in future.
