A novel project, namely, “Thantedam Gender Park,” aimed at bringing women's points of view into developmental matters is to be established in Kozhikode.
The project, which is expected to be a model for the whole of the country and influence gender considerations in five-year plans and annual plans in future, is an initiative of the Department of Social Welfare. The foundation stone for the park will be laid on March 8.
The project envisages programmes for the wholesome development of women in the form of representation in various fields and financial independence. It will also focus on matters like social security for women and their contribution to culture and literature.
According to the Minister for Social Welfare, Dr M.K. Muneer, the park will come up on five acres of land and the first phase, slated to be completed within a year, is estimated to cost Rs 10 crore. The park will be implemented under the leadership of a selected woman architect.
The State Government would look into the possibility of opening similar gender parks in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, the Minister said.
As part of the foundation stone laying function, a week-long national-level gender festival with the theme “Celebrating Womanhood” will be organised, in which woman leaders from various walks of life will participate. The event will feature seminars, cultural programmes, book fair, stage shows, film exhibition, sports meet and ethnic food fest.
The programme will select 100 women achievers at the State and national level and honour them at a special function. Altogether 11 venues will be arranged at various parts of the city to host the event, which is expected to see participation of more than 1,500 delegates.
