The Centre has appointed senior IAS officer BN Sharma as the first Chairman of the National Anti-Profiteering Authority under the newly introduced Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Sharma, a 1985 batch Rajasthan cadre IAS officer, is currently posted as Additional Secretary in the revenue department in the Finance Ministry.
He will hold the rank of Secretary to Government of India while serving as the Chairman of the Authority, which has been set up for a two-year period.
The National Anti-Profiteering Authority has been mandated to ensure that the benefits of input credit and the reduction in GST rates on specified goods or services are passed on to the consumers by way of a commensurate reduction in prices.
Technical Members The Centre has also appointed four senior officials of the rank of Joint Secretary and above as Technical Members in the Authority. These officials are JC Chauhan, Chairman Tax Tribunal, Himachal Pradesh; Bijay Kumar, Principal Commissioner, GST, Kolkata; CL Mahar, Principal Commissioner GST, Meerut, and R Bhagyadevi, ADG, Systems, Chennai.
With the appointment of Chairman and Technical Members, the Authority becomes functional thereby reassuring consumers of he Government's commitment that GST would result in lower prices of goods and services, an official release said.
