Sensex lost 17 points after trading was hit by a three-hour shutdown of the BSE caused due to network outage.
The benchmark index opened higher at 25,876 against the previous close of 25,841. It made a high of 25,999 and low of 25,794 before closing at 25,824.
Turnover on the exchange fell 67 per cent to Rs 1,428 crore against Rs 4,316 crore recorded on Wednesday.
On the NSE, Nifty was down 10 points at 7,715.
Index heavyweight Reliance Industries declined one per cent to Rs 1,007. Realty stocks such DLF, Sobha Developers, Indiabulls Real Estate and Unitech declined on profit-booking after the recent rally.
Steel Authority of India dropped three per cent to Rs 96. It expected that the government may sell a five per cent stake in the state-run steel manufacturer in the last week of this month to speed up divestments and bolster revenue generation.
Major gainers were UCO Bank (6%), Glenmark Pharma (5%), Eicher Motors (5%), Bata India (4%), Crisil (4%), Cadila Health (4%), Biocon (4%) and Indian Hotels (4%).
Prominent losers were GMR Infra (-8%), JP Power (-5%), Jaiprakash Asso (-5%), Unitech (-5%), JP Infratech (-4%), Mahindra & Mah Fin (-4%) and Castrol India (-4%).
