Sensex gained 102 points amidst huge volatility. The index fell 187 points from the day’s opening during the intra-day trading, but recovered well in the later half of trading.
The benchmark index opened at 25,597, made a high of 25,611 and low of 25,409 before closing at 25,576. Turnover on the exchange was down at Rs 3,813 crore against Rs 4,723 logged on Wednesday.
In NSE, Nifty was up 23 points at 7,650.
Tata Motors gained one per cent to Rs 450 after its British luxury car unit Jaguar Land Rover on Wednesday reported strong growth in retail sales for May. Bharti Airtel was down four per cent to Rs 342 after a foreign brokerage downgraded the stock to "underperform" from "neutral" and reduced the target price, citing competition from rival Reliance Jio Infocomm, a unit of Reliance Industries.
Aditya Birla Group company, Hindalco Industries up four per cent to Rs 169 as its US unit Novelis Inc announced the commissioning of its aluminium recycling and casting centre in Germany on Wednesday.
Located adjacent to the company's existing aluminium rolling mill, the new plant will produce up to 400,000 tonne of aluminium sheet ingot from recycled material annually, said Novelis.
Infosys slipped 0.38 per cent to Rs 3,167 even as the company announced selection of Vishal Sikka as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the company. Sikka will be inducted as a whole-time director of the board of Infosys and CEO and MD (Designate) on June 14. He will take over as CEO and MD from SD Shibulal on August 1.
The major gainers were Crisil (10%), Biocon (6%), Godrej Inds (6%), Muthoot Fin (5%), Ashok Leyland (4%), Hindalco Inds (4%) and Amara Raja (4%).
Prominent losers were Suzlon Energy (-5%), JP Infratech (-5%), Bharti Airtel (-4%) and Jain Irrigation (-3%).
