Delhi has emerged as the world's second most populous city in 2014, with a population of about 25 million, according to a United Nations report released on Friday.
Tokyo has taken the top spot with 38 million people and is also expected is the most populated through 2030 as well. Delhi too is estimated to be the second most populated city by 2030 with 36 million people.
In the 2014 revision of the World Urbanisation Prospects, Shanghai took the third spot, followed by Mexico City and Sao Paulo. Mumbai ranked 6th with a population of 20 million, but is estimated to become the fourth most populated by 2030 when its population hits about 28 million.
The report added that just three countries—India, China and Nigeria— together are expected to account for 37 per cent of the projected growth of the world’s urban population between 2014 and 2050. India is projected to add 404 million urban dwellers, China 292 million and Nigeria 212 million.
Asia, despite its lower level of urbanisation, is home to 53 per cent of the world’s urban population, followed by Europe with 14 per cent and Latin America and the Caribbean with 13 per cent.
Successful urban planning agenda will require that attention be given to urban settlements of all sizes, the report added.
