The Union Government is working on mandating 50 per cent reservation for women in the country’s urban local bodies, to promote their participation in urban policy making for developing ‘engendered cities’, Urban Development and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) Minister M.Venkaiah Naidu said on Monday.
“The HUPA ministry has already held consultations with States on 50 per cent reservation for women in urban local bodies through an amendment to the Constitution,” he said.
The Minister was speaking at the inauguration of a two day ‘International Conference on Gender and Urban Poverty’ here.
Naidu added that under the Housing for All scheme, joint ownership of houses to be built will be promoted besides giving over riding preference to women headed households, single women under different components like Credit Linked Subsidy, Rental Housing etc.
