As Madhya Pradesh appeared headed for a cliffhanger with the ruling BJP and Congress locked in a close fight, small parties and independents may play a crucial role in deciding who forms the next government in the state.

As per the results and trends, the Congress tally in the 230-member House is 111 (won 27 and leading in 84 seats), while BJP is a close second with 111 (won 27 seats and leading in 84constituencies).

In the 2013 poll, the BJP had won 165 seats, securing a comfortable majority in the Assembly, while confining the Congress to 58 seats.

This time, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) are leading in two seats each while a tribal political outfit, Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP), is leading in one seat and independents are ahead in three segments.

These smaller parties and independents might play a crucial role if the elections throw up a hung House.

Rajasthan: CPI(M) leads in 2 seats

cpim

The flag of CPI(M) (File Photo)

After drawing a blank in the last election in Rajasthan, the CPI(M) is all set to win two seats, both of which were held by the BJP.

The Left party’s Balwan Poonia is leading with 73,725 votes in Bhadra constituency of Hanumangarh district. His nearest rival is BJP’s Sanjeev Kumar.

In Shree Dungargarh constituency of Bikaner district, the CPI(M)’s Giridharilal Mahiya is leading with 72,361 votes. Congress candidate Mangalram is at the second position in this seat.

In the 2013 elections, the CPI(M) or the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had failed to win any seat. It won three in 2008 elections.

The CPI(M)’s Rajasthan in-charge Hannan Mollah said the trend of election results in the three Hindi-heartland states has ended the myth of the BJP’s invincibility. “In the last two-three years of electoral politics, Modi-Shah combine emerged as invincible. It seemed no party could defeat the BJP under their leadership. This myth has been broken in this election,” said Mollah.

Mollah, who is also the general secretary of the CPI(M)’s farmers’ wing All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), said that farmers’ issues were crucial in the elections for the five states.

“BJP loss in the Hindi-heartland was due to farmers’ distress in rural areas. The saffron party has been turned down by farmers and those living in rural areas,” he claimed.

The CPI(M) leader added that in the next year’s Lok Sabha election, farmers and rural distress would be one of the key poll issues.

CPI(M) fought in Rajasthan on 28 seats as part of a seven-party alliance called the Loktantrik Morcha. The alliance also include Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), Marxist Communist Party of India (United), Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal and Janata Dal (Secular).

As per latest trends, Congress is heading to form government in the state.

AAP on poll trends

India will be “BJP Mukt” in the year 2019, the Aam Aadmi Party claimed, as assembly election trends indicated that the saffron party was trailing in two of the three states it ruled.

Lok Sabha elections are due next year and the assembly polls were billed as a semi-final before the general elections. “2019 will be BJP Mukt Bharat (BJP-free India),” senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said. “The results of assembly polls indicate that people are fed up with jumla (rhetoric).”

Singh said the BJP should seek votes for the work it has done and not in the name of building Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The AAP leader said farmers, youths, traders and women are “not happy” with BJP’s policies due to which the party seems loosing ground in the states it ruled.

On AAP’s performance in the assembly polls, Singh said his party fought elections with limited resources and its leadership. “It is a start for us. Our local leadership with limited resources fought the elections and worked hard,” he said.

The AAP had fielded candidates in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.

Congress inches towards majority in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarb

Voters had clearly rejected the BJP in what was an indication of things to come in 2019, Congress leaders said as trends showed the party ahead in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan and locked in a tantalising, see-saw battle in Madhya Pradesh.

The party is likely to get an absolute majority in Chhattisgarh and is reaching the simple majority mark in Rajasthan while going neck-and-neck in Madhya Pradesh, according to trends on the Election Commission website.

The BJP is in power in all three Hindi heartland states. “This is a clear indication of things to come in 2019. The BJP made tall promises, but could not fulfil them. The ‘Achhe Din’ they spoke about never came,” Ashok Gehlot told reporters in Jaipur.

The former Rajasthan chief minister said the way Gandhi led the campaign in Gujarat, taking on PM Modi on his home turf, spoke a lot. He said the public is suffering under the BJP rule and Gandhi raised key issues concerning the people because of which Modi’s “graph came down“.

“We are moving towards a full majority and I am sure it will be clear once final numbers are in, but still we welcome all like-minded and anti-BJP parties to support us and we are in touch...I am certain that we will come to power in Rajasthan. I am hopeful that like minded parties against the BJP will come together,” Sachin Pilot told reporters in Jaipur.

Pilot recalled that exactly a year ago Gandhi became the chief of the party. “What could be a better gift to him than victory in these states,” he said.

In Madhya Pradesh, party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia said trends reflect people’s desire for change, while state Congress chief Kamal Nath exuded confidence that they will form the government in the state.

The initial vote count suggested the Congress and the BJP were neck and neck in Madhya Pradesh, while Gandhi’s party had taken the lead in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

Scindia, who spearheaded the Congress campaign in Madhya Pradesh, said he was very confident that the Congress would form the government in the state. Asked about posters being put up that Kamal Nath would be CM, Scindia said, “Let us not put the cart before the horse. Let us wait for the verdict”.

Congress-led alliance needs introspection: TDP

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) said the Congresss-led alliance, of which it is a part, needs to analyse and introspect on the grouping’s “failure” in the Telangana Assembly elections.

“We have to analyse the factors that contributed to the success of TRS and failure of our alliance,” said Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy, senior leader of TDP, led by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. “We were expecting to get more number of seats. The results are not to our expectations,” Reddy told.

The alliance which also comprised the Telangana Jana Samithi and the Communist Party of India, did not fare well, and “we have to analyse and introspect where it went wrong, and we have to work together”, he said.

“We have to respect people’s verdict”, Reddy said, adding the alliance would now strive hard to see to it that the TRS government implements the “tall promises” made by the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led party.

Results in Telangana unexpected: CPI

The Communist Party of India alleged that the TRS resorted to “huge distribution of money and liquor” to influence voters, and described the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led party’s performance in the assembly polls as a “technical victory and not a moral one“.

The maiden polls for the 119-seat Telangana Assembly were held on December 7 with 1,821 candidates in the fray. It is a fight between Congress-led Praja Kutami and ruling TRS, with the BJP testing its chance by contesting alone.

The key contest in Mizoram , that went to polls on November 28, is between Congress and Mizo National Front (MNF), with Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla seeking a third consecutive term. The BJP also aims to make a debut in the Northeastern State.

For the first time since the formation of Chhattisgarh , the State is witnessing a three-cornered fight in the Assembly elections.

Rajasthan went to polls on December 7 for 199 out of total 200 seats. The Congress is counting on the anti-incumbency factor to win in the State, with the ruling BJP facing a major challenge in retaining public support for its policies.

In Madhya Pradesh , analysts have pointed to clear signs of the anti-incumbency factor against the BJP, which has been in power for 15 years now.
