Akhilesh Gupta has been elected as the President of Indian Meteorological Society for a two-year term. Gupta (50) is the youngest-ever President of the society, a spokesman said.

Established in 1956, the society is a non-profit organisation that promotes advancement, dissemination of knowledge, and application of meteorology and related sciences.

Gupta had only recently been elected as Fellow of Indian Meteorological Society. Those elected Fellows earlier include APJ Abdul Kalam; MS Swaminathan; K Kasturirangan; and Jagadish Shukla (US).

Among new council members elected are: Shailesh Nayak; Vice-Presidents Ajit Tyagi and B Mukhopadhyay; Secretary KJ Ramesh; Treasurer KK Singh; Joint Secretary SC Bhan; and eight others.

Gupta started his career as Meteorologist in India Meteorological Department in 1985. He later joined National Centre for Medium range Weather Forecasting in 1994 where he worked till 2006.

He has been Adviser to Minister, Science and Technology and Earth Sciences and Secretary to University Grants Commission.

He is currently the Head of Climate Change Programme of Department of Science and Technology where he coordinates two National Missions on climate change.
