Jan. 2: The Government notifies decision to extend the deadline for telecom operators to comply with the guidelines in Press Note 5 related to increase of FDI limit to 74 per cent. The new deadline is April 2, 2007. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India says it could enforce a regulation to bring down the roaming tariff as a last option. The Essar Group receives `in-principle’ financial support from leading banks and financial institutions for up to $24 billion for a possible buyout of Hutch-Essar. Jan. 3: Vodafone executives meet senior officials in the Department of Telecom; discuss Hutchison Essar takeover. The Hinduja Group also throws in its hat for acquiring the company. Jan. 4: Income-Tax Department asks Patni Computer Systems to pay up Rs 63 crore, after being denied tax deduction for its software development units located in Software Technology Parks of India area. Jan. 5: Hutchison Telecom International asks the Hinduja Group to submit a proposal if it is interested in picking up the stake in Hutchison Essar. Jan. 7: Cellular service providers oppose a proposal from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to make infrastructure-sharing mandatory as part of the licence agreement. Jan. 8: Vodafone starts its due diligence of Hutchison Essar Ltd. Jan. 10: Reliance Communications says its board has approved the raising of funds for pursuing the company’s interest in acquiring Hutchison-Essar Ltd. Jan. 12: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India proposes to reduce port charges for service providers by up to 29 per cent. Jan. 17: Egypt-based Orascom says it holds the first right of refusal in case Hutchison decides to sell equity in Hutchison Telecom International Ltd (HTIL). Jan. 18: SubexAzure Ltd sets a new acquisition record in Indian IT history after it announces plans to buy out Canadian firm Syndesis Ltd in a $164.5-million (about Rs 730 crore) all-cash deal. Jan. 21: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India says it will undertake another review of the controversial access deficit charges. Jan. 23: Bharti Airtel announces a slew of initiatives including buying out SingTel’s 50 per cent stake in joint venture under sea cable company Network i2i for $110 million. Jan. 24: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India orders up to 56 per cent reduction in domestic mobile roaming charges. Jan. 26: The Department of Telecommunications refuses to extend the deadline for operators to complete the verification of mobile subscribers by March 31. Jan. 28: Shareholders of Reliance Communications Ltd approve a scheme of transfer of the existing wireless towers (CDMA and GSM) and related infrastructure of the company to its subsidiary, Reliance Telecom Infrastructure Ltd. Jan. 30: The Hinduja Group to carry out due diligence on Hutchison Essar on February 5 and 6 before putting in its bid to acquire the cellular company. The Internet Service Providers Association of India says spectrum for Wi-Max services should not be auctioned and should be offered to ISPs for wireless broadband services.
