Tweeple using the Twitter Android app had a sweet surprise on Thursday. There was the usual notification that the app had an upgrade. When they upgraded, they realised it was not just one of the 'regular' upgrades. It was no longer the dull, cumbersome Twitter app. It had a swanky new Holo UI, included a new font and also enabled the user to swipe between screens.

“You can now quickly navigate between tabs by swiping across your screen. And as you type your Tweet or search, you’ll see username and hashtag suggestions, making it easier to connect with friends and join conversations,” says Twitter in its blog.

If a link in a tweet has been shared from another app, for example Path, a link below takes you to the app. If you haven’t downloaded the app, it takes you to the app page in the Google Play store, so that you can download the app.

If you are opening a photo shared from Flickr, the link below the photo allows you to view the photo in the Flickr app. If you don’t have the app, you will be taken to the Flickr app download page.

Tweeple having Android phones were mostly using third party Twitter clients as the official Twitter client was pathetic. The new app will hopefully enable Twitter get back tweeples to use their app instead of a third party one. Going by the new UI, it looks like Twitter has done it right this time.
