Three surveys, conducted by travel websites HolidayIQ, TripAdvisor and MakeMyTrip, reveal that the majority of women travellers believe India is a safe place to travel in. In the results of the first two, Delhi is named as the most unsafe city. Trip Advisor’s survey found that foreign destinations are still perceived as being safer compared with Indian ones.

Indian solo women travellers are way more cautious than their global peers on their journey. Among the top international destinations for solo women travellers globally (according to TripAdvisor review data), India ranks No 53 behind countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Peru, China, etc.

The surveys found a rise in the number of women travelling solo, as it allows them to be free to do their own thing, face the challenge of travelling on their own, and because their family and friends do not have the time or other resources to accompany them, in that order. Travelling in groups of women is increasing too. Trip Advisor finds that of the 40 per cent who polled that they travel in a group, the majority say they do so as they want to re-connect with their friends (56 per cent), they enjoy visiting and doing the same things on holiday (51 per cent) and because such trips afford them a break from family life (36 per cent). Birthdays, pre-wedding get-togethers and simply taking a break spur women to take a trip.
