German luxury carmaker Audi has launched the Q3 compact SUV, with two variants priced at Rs 26.21 lakh (ex-showroom, Maharashtra) and Rs 31.49 lakh. This will be its new entry model for the country after the A4 sedan, with which it hopes to garner volumes and challenge BMW for the top spot in the luxury car market. However, only 500 units are available in the initial phase of booking across 19 Audi dealerships. “The launch of the Audi Q3 is in line with our top-down strategy for India. It leads the way for the Four Rings to enter a new segment in India, with ever increasing customer groups demanding for luxury mobility in a compact form,” said Mr Michael Perschke, Head, Audi India. The feature-loaded Q3, which incidentally competes with BMW's X1, sports a 2-litre TDI quattro diesel engine putting out 177 hp of power. Mercedes-Benz's competitor in the segment — the GLC — is at present in development and is likely for launch only by late next year or 2014. — roudra.b@thehindu.co.in
