The chorus for opening up of the multi-brand retail trade seems to getting louder. French retailer Carrefour's India head, Mr Jean Noel Bironneau, met the Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Anand Sharma, to reportedly lobby for allowing foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail trade.
Carrefour, world's second largest retailer by revenue, has two operational stores in India. It is planning four more stores. These stores will be coming up in Agra, Pune, Bangalore and Meerut. Carrefour plans to have over 3 lakh sq feet of retail space under its umbrella by 2013. Last year, the Government had made amendments in the retail trade. It had increased FDI in single brand retail to 100 per cent from existing 51 per cent.
