After gaining more recognition in the Companies Bill, Company Secretaries are now eyeing a share of income tax related work to further their professional interests.
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) has urged the Government to consider company secretaries within the meaning of ‘accountants’ under the proposed direct taxes code.
If this was to happen and a new tax code gets enacted, then company secretaries would be able to appear before income tax authorities on behalf of their clients.
Company Secretaries are also looking to undertake certification work under the income tax law, it is learnt.
A formal letter to the Finance Ministry has been sent by ICSI in this regard, sources in the company secretaries’ institute said.
The Companies Bill, which has been recently passed by Parliament, has recognised Company Secretaries as key managerial personnel.
It has also made secretarial audit mandatory for listed companies and such a class of companies as may be prescribed – taking company secretaries closer to their cherished goal of becoming governance professionals.
