Garware-Wall Ropes keen to grow technical textile business

Garware-Wall Ropes is aiming to grow its technical textile business by focusing on import substitutes, particularly in the defence sector.

The company has signed a letter of intent with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop products.

The company recently supplied its first batch of technical textile to cover radars at sensitive locations. The Department of Science and Technology has recognised the company’s two research and development centres at Pune and Wai.

BusinessLine , Shujaul Rehman, President and Chief Operating Officer, Garware-Wall Ropes, said the growth in defence technical textiles is immense, as the country imports 20 per cent of its requirement from different countries such as Israel, Russia and the US. “The market size of technical textiles in Indian defence is estimated at ₹1,300 crore.

The Government thrust on ‘Make in India’ has re-energised companies like ours, which are focused on research,” he said.

Garware has also developed a patented product to replace the copper coated net in aquaculture, also known as aqua farming.
