Grasim Industries, an Aditya Birla Group company, on Thursday, decided to suspend production of staple fibre at its Nagda plant in Madhya Pradesh till the onset of monsoon. Production of Chlor-Alkali at Nagda has also been halved, said Grasim Industries in a statement to BSE.
“Due to water shortage at Nagda, the company has to curtail production at its staple fibre plant located at Nagda and the said plant is likely to be closed from June 3 till the onset of monsoon,” it said.
The company has a chlor-alkali production capacity of 258,000 tonnes per annum. Grasim had suspended operations at Nagda last year too due to delay in onset of monsoon.
The company's plant at Nagda is the largest unit producing a wide range of viscose staple fibre (VSF).
Nagda is also the largest producer of spun-dyed specialty fibre in the world.
Aditya Birla group commands about 22 per cent global market share in VSF.
The company is, however, operating other staple fibre plants at Kharach in Gujarat and Harihar in Karnataka at their full capacity, it added.
Shares of Grasim Industries were down 2 per cent at Rs 2,282 on Thursday.
