Kingfisher Airlines Chairman Vijay Mallya on Thursday appeared before the Special Court for Economic Offences in Bangalore in connection with a summons issued by the Income-Tax Department in three cases.
The cases were filed against him for not remitting ₹400 crore in tax deducted at source. The Court granted Mallya bail while directing him to deposit ₹1 lakh as cash surety in each case, as well as bail bonds and solvent surety for the like sums.
Mallya appeared before the court at 11 am.
The judge adjourned the hearing of his bail plea to 3 pm and asked Jeevan J Neeralgi, counsel for the I-T Department, to file objections.
“Mallya is not likely to co-operate … He is a non-resident Indian, frequently travelling abroad … (he is) likely to sabotage the trial as he is an influential businessman …,” said the I-T Department counsel.
However, bail was granted. Mallya returned at around 3 pm and left a few hours later, after signing the bail papers.
