JSW's Bengal plant awaits land-lease pacts

JSW Steel has said that the company was awaiting completion of land lease agreements to achieve financial closure of the proposed steel plant in West Bengal.

According to Mr Biswadip Gupta, JSW expects to enter into a lease agreement with the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) for 189 acres dispersed within the project area of over 4,300 acres. JSW had proposed to set up a three-million tonne steel plant at Salboni in the West Midnapore district.

“Financial closure will happen soon after lease agreements are signed. Discussions are on with the WBIDC in this regard,” he told

Business Line, adding that the company was “in possession” of the land.

The West Bengal Government has, however, refuted these claims.

According to Mr Partha Chatterjee, State Commerce and Industries Minister, all required clearances have already been provided by the State. Meanwhile, Mr Gupta added that JSW was already in talks with the State Government for sourcing of iron ore from neighbouring States for proposed steel plant.
