Luxury cars on the road will hit four lakh by 2020 in India, opening up huge demand for adequately skilled personnel to service them.

There are 50,000 Mercedes Benz cars already on the roads, according to Devdutta Chandavarkar, Vice-President, After-Sales, Mercedes-Benz India.

Dearth of hands

They need skilled after-sales service but there is a dearth of adequate hands, Chandavarkar told newspersons hereon Tuesday.

It is estimated that luxury car after-sales and servicing will require up to 12,000 skilled hands over the next five years.

This explains why the company has tied up with reputed engineering colleges to introduce advanced diploma course in automotive mechatronics.

Chandavarkar was here to launch a one-year, full-time diploma course at the Government Engineering College, Barton Hill.

This is the third such collaboration, and the first outside Maharashtra, being established by the company.

Automotive mechatronics is a new field of specialisation emerging from the combination of mechanical, electrical, computer and applied control engineering.
