The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has reported an oil spill off the coast of Uran near Navi Mumbai. About 5,000 litres had spilled due to a puncture in a trunk pipeline, which was carrying the oil from Mumbai High fields to Uran processing complex. A company official on the condition of anonymity said that the leak was triggered by the shutting down of power in a section of the processing complex.

Power- loss led to build up of pressure in the pipeline, which eventually led to the rupture. The spill was detected late Sunday evening, after which a crisis management team of the company was deployed, which put boom barriers to prevent further spreading of the spill. An agency has been appointed for the cleaning up operation, the official said.

The official added that there is no loss of production at Uran and Mumbai High fields. As soon as the pipeline monitoring system reported the leak, the oil flow was diverted to another line. A clear picture will emerge tomorrow when the team submits its full report.
