Revamped TELK looks to expand transformer biz

Transformers and Electricals Kerala Ltd (TELK) is looking forward to play an active role in the transformer market space for 220kV/ 400kV/ 765kV voltage levels.

For this, the company officials said that efforts are on for a tie up transfer of technology from a proven overseas partner.

TELK products are designed to suit any specific requirement of customers and to meet the relevant national and international standards.

The customers included all State Electricity Boards, NTPC, NPC, TATA Electric Company, Torrent Power Limited, L&T, and Siemens. The company has supplied more than 2,375 transformers (85000 MVA) till now.

The products are also exported to countries like Tanzania, Indonesia, Oman, Iran, Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore, a press statement issued here said.

TELK, which is celebrating its golden jubilee celebrations from December 15, was established in 1963 by the Kerala Government in collaboration with Hitachi Limited, Japan. It was the first company to manufacture 400 kV class transformers in India in 1977.

With five decades of pioneering operations in the power transformer space, TELK has created a good reputation for failure-proof transformer.

From 1990 to 2007, TELK continued to manufacture best quality transformers. However, because of financial crisis, the company got referred to BIFR and thereafter started making financial losses.

In 2007, NTPC joined hands with Kerala Government in acquiring 45 per cent stake and infused fresh equity, carried out financial restructuring and introduced some of their well proven system and procedures in the work culture.

It started showing positive results and today TELK is a zero-debt and dividend-paying company with a positive net worth of over Rs 116 crore and have also come out of the purview of BIFR.

The 50 years celebration function will be held at the factory Angamaly in the presence of V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, the Minster of Public Works.
